Job Posting: Researcher

Position Overview

Climate Rights International (CRI) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Researcher.

CRI believes that progress on climate change cannot succeed without protecting the human rights of present and future generations – and the fight for human rights cannot succeed without protecting our planet against climate change.

To achieve this, we work in partnership with local and international groups to document how human rights violations contribute to climate change, and how climate change contributes to human rights abuses. We press governments and corporations to take urgent action to end abuses, limit greenhouse gas emissions, and protect vital carbon sinks. We insist on progressive interpretation of existing law to advance obligations to protect human rights in relation to climate change, and we work with partners to further develop international legally binding standards and accountability mechanisms. And we partner with activists and affected communities to demand justice, accountability, and reparations from powerful interests that put their lives and their children’s lives at risk.

Responsibilities

  • Research and investigate climate-related human rights violations, including both desk and field research.
  • Collect, analyze, verify and cross-check information from a wide variety of sources such as victims, witnesses, experts, government officials, diplomats, journalists, NGOs, and others.
  • Draft reports, press releases, briefing papers, letters, opeds, and other documents for publication and/or private submissions.
  • Engage in public and private advocacy with governments, companies, international organizations, the media, the public, and others.
  • Participate in public debates, including through appearances in the media and by maintaining an active social media presence.
  • Identify key climate change and human rights issues and work with colleagues at CRI and other organizations to develop strategies to address them.
  • Contribute to internal policy discussions and strategic planning.
  • Assist colleagues with fundraising.
  • Be a timely, collegial, dependable colleague.
  • Be willing to work flexible hours to accommodate colleagues and events in other time zones as needed.
  • Be willing to travel to conduct field research and engage in advocacy as needed.
  • Other duties as required.
