Deyah El-Azhari is an Associate at Climate Rights International, based in San Carlos.
Deyah graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a BA in Political Science. As a Climate Justice Leader at the CU Boulder Environmental Center, she facilitated educational workshops and coordinated student service projects for local Indigenous non-profits. She has moderated panel discussions and spoken at social justice conferences. Her team designed the Climate Justice Leadership Alliance micro-credential program for students.
As a member of the CU Boulder Environmental Board, she worked on a fossil fuel divestment campaign and chaired the Sustainable Development Committee for a semester. She also canvassed for the grassroots “Fur Free Boulder” campaign, which passed on the ballot in 2021.
She was a lead planner for the Second Annual Climate Summit for San Mateo County at the Thrive Alliance of Nonprofits. Following that, at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, Deyah supported the administration of a DOE grant collaboration with tribes, NGOs, national labs, and higher education institutions in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to promote renewable energy grid resilience through pilot projects and open-source data tools.
Deyah loves environmental journalism and poetry. One of her fondest memories is reciting her poem about trees at the UN Right Here, Right Now protests alongside many inspiring activists.
